Officially delimited in 1932 and classified as a Grand Cru in 2007, Kaefferkopf is a unique and diverse terroir, both in terms of its geology (deep and heavy granite and carbonate sandstone) and its exposure (vineyards facing southeast on the six hills, or "kopf," surrounding the village). The magic of this terroir lies in the expression of this diversity of soils, climates, bedrock, and exposure through varietal diversity. This results in a true gustatory identity, a clear common trait, and one that differentiates this Grand Cru from its two neighbors, which we are also fortunate enough to cultivate. The Meralla estate's No. 28 is made using a short maceration of Gewurztraminer, aged for 18 months in oak barrels.
